AMERICA'S WORST AIRPORTS FOR FLIGHT DELAYS REVEALED
A new study has revealed America's worst airports for flight delays - and you're out of luck if you're flying into Florida.
This summer has been plagued with flight delays and cancellations following a faulty update by the software company CrowdStrike that caused massive Microsoft outages worldwide.
Major airlines faced significant flight disruptions on Wednesday, with American Airlines leading the pack with 69 cancellations. Delta, United, and Spirit also grounded over 20 flights each, according to USA TODAY.
Business text messaging platform Essendex analyzed over 500 of the most common flight routes across the nation's 25 busiest airports to identify the best and worst routes for flight delays.
Orlando International Airport (MCO) appeared more frequently than any other airport on the list of flight routes with the highest delay rates.
In second place comes Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) followed by Miami International Airport (MIA), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
'The Orlando International Airport has faced many issues in recent months due to storms canceling flights, on top of already busy conditions due to Walt Disney World and Universal Studios crowds coming in and out of the airport,' the study said.
'The data revealed planes arrived at their destinations on average four minutes late from Orlando, with 14 out of the top 100 most delayed flights arriving into or leaving Orlando.'
Surprisingly, the flight route with the most delays was from Orlando to Philadelphia, averaging a 35-minute tardiness. However, the reverse journey typically arrives 22 minutes ahead of schedule.
'With over 100 domestic and 50 international destinations, Orlando welcomed more than 57.7 million passengers in 2023 as the busiest airport in the state of Florida,' the study said.
The recent airline outage has significantly impacted flight schedules, making it difficult to determine which carriers are currently experiencing the most delays and cancellations. However, the Essendex study, conducted prior to this disruption, identified JetBlue as the airline with the highest rate of flight delays.
'JetBlue Airways stands out as the only U.S. carrier with flights arriving, on average, delayed. Despite the data finding a minimal average delay of one minute,' the study said.
'This coincides with JetBlue being crowned as the worst airline in the U.S. for the second consecutive year by the Wall Street Journal, due to extreme delays, frequent cancellations, and two-hour tarmac waits.'
While other airlines struggled with delays, Delta ironically stood out as the carrier with the best on-time performance. However following the outage, it has become the airline with the most flight cancellations and the second-most flight delays this week.
'Delta Air Lines frequently outperforms its scheduled arrival times across the board, with flights arriving, on average, 25 minutes ahead of schedule,' the study said.
Despite being identified as the airport with the highest overall flight delay rate in the study, Orlando International is not among the airports facing the most significant disruptions this week.
ATL takes first place for most delayed flights this week. In second place comes DFW, followed by Charlotte Douglas International (CLT), Denver International Airport (DIA), Chicago O'Hare International (ORD).
For airports with the most flight cancellations this week, Hartsfield-Jackson International is still in first place, followed by Minneapolis-Saint Paul International, Detroit Metro Wayne Co, LaGuardia, and Charlotte Douglas International.
