From ghost towns to warships: Unexpected discoveries when water levels drop

Every continent is feeling the effects of climate change, more than any other time in history. Rivers, lakes, and reservoirs all over the world are pulling back to reveal ancient sites and forgotten pieces of history, some that were likely never meant to be found. In July and August, dropping water levels revealed German warships from WWII strewn across the river's floor. Nazi ships full of explosives appeared by the river port in the Serbian town of Prahovo over the summer, numbering more than 20. They have been identified as part of Nazi Germany’s Black Sea Fleet, which was sunk by the Soviet Army in 1944. This isn't the first time this has happened, however. Intrigued? Click through this gallery to see some of the most interesting and disturbing discoveries made due to dropping water levels and severe droughts.

Historical figures called crazy, who were right all along

So many of the things we take for granted today, things that so obviously improve our lives, didn't catch on as easily as you might think. It can be difficult for people to come around to new ideas, even when adopting them would be in their best interest. Although it's great that people usually come around to amazing ideas, it can be a very frustrating process for those thinkers and inventors who can't see why the world doesn't want their help. In some cases, these heroes of humanity couldn't even stick around long enough to see their work be appreciated. But we can certainly appreciate them now. Read on to learn about the figures throughout history who were right all along.

The most dangerous terrorist groups in the world

In 2023, there was a dramatic rise in tensions between the US and the Middle East. The October 7 escalation in the conflict between Israel and Palestine led Israel and its allies to begin a relentless attack on Gaza, while Palestine's allies in the region also increased their activities. As Israel waged war against Hamas, other militant groups in the Middle East such as the Houthi militia in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon ramped up their attacks on Israeli and US targets. Many of these groups are believed to be sponsored by Iran, forming a loose alliance known as the Axis of Resistance. Despite their differences in ideologies, they are united by Iran's support and their shared opposition of Israel and the US. On the flip side, the Islamic State seems to have cut down on its attacks in 2023. The group claimed a total of 470 attacks in 2023 compared to 717 the previous year. Al-Qaeda was also relatively quiet compared to previous years, partly due to counterterrorism measures as well as pressure from opposing groups in the region. The real statistics on terrorism trends will come with the release of the next Global Terrorism Index, which is published around March each year. The annual index provides a comprehensive summary of the key global trends and patterns in terrorism over the last decade. Produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace, the report considers not only deaths but also incidents, hostages, and injuries from terrorism. It also names the top four deadliest terrorist groups operating around the world. So, what were the most dangerous terrorist groups in the world as of the 2024 report? Click through and be warned.
