The deadliest bombings in military history

Aerial warfare has been around for much longer than modern aircraft have. More than 1,000 years ago, armies in China used incendiary kites known as fire crows to rain fire and debris upon their enemies. Since then, everything from kites to hot air balloons and airplanes have been used to inflict damage from above. The 20th century saw more aerial warfare tactics than any era before or after. With the advent of unmanned drones and satellite surveillance systems, the days of B-52 bombers and dogfighters are over, but it can be argued that's for the best. In World War II alone, an estimated 2.7 million tons of explosives were dropped from airplanes flying high above their targets, and with no targeting systems to speak of, the collateral damage proved to be enormous. Close to one million civilian deaths were caused by the indiscriminate bombing campaigns carried out by both the Allied and Axis powers. Some of these events are well known, such as the unfathomably destructive atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while others remain in the shadows of history. So, which bombing campaigns proved to be the most destructive ever? Read on to find out.

Cinder cones: the mini volcanoes that pack a punch

Cinder cones are the smallest and simplest type of volcano. But that doesn't mean they can't pack a punch. Best described as steep, conical hills, cinder cones are formed by pyroclastic rock fragments, or cinders, which accumulate and gradually build a tapered mound or knoll with a bowl-shaped crater at the top. While most are modest in size, some appear as large as mountains, spectacular in their scale and beauty. Cinder cones are found scattered around the world, but where can you admire the most dramatic and compelling examples? Click through and find out which destinations can claim cinder cone fame.

These are the biggest volcanic eruptions of all time

From Vesuvius to Laki, we've seen some monstrous eruptions of volcanoes throughout history. Most of these volcanoes are stratovolcanoes, meaning cone-shaped elevations that were built over time from layers of ash and lava. Due to their relatively soft composition, pressure builds up inside until they blow up, which results in sudden explosive eruptions. Their steep slopes then generate pyroclastic flows, making them some of the most dangerous types of volcanoes. The power of such eruptions is measured using the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI), which is a scale that goes from one to eight. Each succeeding VEI is 10 times greater than the last. Need examples? Click on for some of the worst volcanic eruptions in history.

The Scramble for Africa: how Europe conquered a continent

For over four centuries, European nations reshaped the world and transformed from a collection of warring kingdoms into the dominant global powers. But no period of expansion was as dramatic (or as devastating) as the 19th and early 20th centuries, when European empires tightened their grip on the planet. At the heart of this expansion was Africa—the last major landmass that European powers had not yet divided among themselves. What followed was a striking display of technological advancement, diplomatic maneuvering, and sheer ruthlessness, culminating in what is now called the Scramble for Africa. But how did European nations achieve such rapid expansion? Why was this period so different from earlier waves of colonization? And how, despite the collapse of these empires, does their influence still shape the world today? Click through the following gallery to find out.

NASA's recycling ambitions on the Moon

When the Artemis program astronauts land on the Moon in 2026, they will be responsible for building their home. Following the wasteful (albeit extraordinary) space excursion that was Project Apollo, NASA is determined that, this time round, the astronauts will make use of recycled materials. Recycling on the Moon is not easy, however. The lunar environment makes many processes more difficult. Astronauts will be subject to more physical limitations than people trying to recycle on Earth. In answer to this problem, NASA has launched a competition asking entrants to come up with creative ideas for how astronauts can recycle materials once they land on the Moon. Curious? Check out this gallery to find out more.

Spooky urban legends from Japan

Japan is a country with a rich cultural history, embellished through an extensive canon of folklore that ties in traditional spiritual beliefs and legends passed down and matured through generations. Japanese folklore is already full of tales of spirits and demons, but modern Japan has developed its own unique style of urban legend, which inspired horror movie classics like 'The Ring' (2002) and 'The Grudge' (2004). Stories of vengeful spirits lurking in everyday locations like school bathrooms and quiet train stations are part of the social education for most children growing up in Japan! The scariest thing about many of these trippy tales is that they can be traced back to horrifying real-life events, such as deadly accidents and brutal murders. Naturally, you may be curious! Breeds of dogs banned in different countries

When you're thinking about what kind of dog to get, most people go for the more obvious breeds, but some go for the ones with a "violent" reputation only to find out that it's actually restricted or banned in their home country. In fact, 52 countries have some form of breed-specific legislation, which is a type of law that prohibits or restricts particular breeds or types of dog. They range from outright banning the possession of these dogs (with the threat of putting them down), to restrictions and conditions on ownership, including things like what age a person can be to own one, and the requirement of a short leash, a muzzle, registration, insurance, sterilization, microchip implants, or even a tattoo. On Tuesday, August 20, a 53-year-old man from Lancashire in the UK was found dead in his home after being killed by his own dog. The dog was an XL bully, or large American bulldog, a breed that was banned in England in February 2024. Police called to the scene shot and killed the dog, stating that it still posed "a significant threat of serious harm." They are looking for information about the tragic incident and attempting to piece together the circumstances surrounding the man's death. Laws restricting the breeding, sale, and ownership of XL bullies have been rolled out across the UK in 2024. Such laws are born out of fatalities or maulings, and so they presume specific breeds to be dangerous or vicious. Naturally, there has been some backlash, but nonetheless, the restrictions remain in place. Click through to see the most commonly banned or restricted dogs around the world.

Is the Shroud of Turin a genuine relic or a medieval hoax?

Its existence was first recorded in the year 1359 while in the possession of the famed knight Geoffroi de Charny, the seigneur de Lirey. It was denounced as fake by the Bishop of Troyes when first exhibited and has been a topic of dispute for centuries since. Now, new X-ray techniques used to date the shroud appear to confirm it was made around 2,000 years ago, in the time of Jesus. Intrigued? What is the Arctic 'Cold Rush,' and why is it heating up?

In December 2024, China unveiled a huge flat-top cargo ship it described as "polar ready." As big as an aircraft carrier, the Fan Zhou 8 has the capability to transport ultra-large components while carving through thick sea ice. Its appearance is indicative of the "Cold Rush"—a new geoeconomic competition to extract additional mineral wealth from the Arctic. Indeed, the gradual yet relentless melting of the polar ice cap is likely to open up new sea routes across the Arctic Ocean, thus facilitating access to previously untapped natural resources. The economic rewards are potentially huge, but the environmental damage and loss of biodiversity to the region is incalculable. Analysts are also voicing defense and security concerns.
