Indonesian airports reopen after volcano eruption left 340,000 stranded
Indonesia reopened five airports this September 8, after a volcanic eruption forced their closure for two days, disrupting nearly 3,000 flights and leaving more than 340,000 passengers stranded. Mount Anak Krakatau, located about 150 km (some 93 miles) from Jakarta, erupted on September 5, sending volcanic ash into the airspace around Java and Sumatra. Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was among those affected, with airlines now working to clear a major backlog of delayed and canceled flights. Authorities warned that further eruptions remain possible.
